How to Choose a Washing Machine: Capacity, Spin Speed and Efficiency

Washing machines look similar, but a few specifications decide whether one suits your household.

Drum capacity

Capacity is given in kilograms of dry laundry. As a guide, 5 to 7 kg suits one or two people, 8 to 9 kg suits a family, and 10 kg or more suits large households or heavy items like duvets. Buying a bigger drum than you need uses more water and energy per load.

Spin speed

Higher speeds, such as 1,400 rpm, remove more water, so clothes dry faster and tumble dryers use less energy. Very fast spins can add wear on delicate fabrics, so look for adjustable speeds.

Energy and water efficiency

Check the efficiency label and the stated annual consumption of energy and water, not just the letter grade. Running costs add up over a machine’s life of ten years or more.

Other features worth checking

  • Front-load or top-load: front-loaders are usually gentler and more efficient; top-loaders are easier on the back.
  • Inverter motor: typically quieter and longer lasting.
  • Quick and eco programmes: useful for busy households.
  • Warranty and parts availability: a longer warranty reduces risk.

Measure the space and the doorway before you order, and read independent reviews as well as the manufacturer’s specifications.
